Abstract

This article seeks to identify radicalism discourse by carrying out methodological criticism and constructing radicalism models and scenarios that have been developed by state institutions and elements of civil society in Indonesia. The idea of constructing radicalist discourse is inherent in Islam and seems to have binary opposition to the west. The conception of knowledge about radicalism adopted by state institutions and elements of civil society allows them to carry out a process of reproduction of knowledge about radicalism discourse. The efforts taken not only reproduce knowledge about radicalism, but also elaborate knowledge by constructing indicators and parameters of radicalism. Existing studies focus on community perceptions at the macro level about the evolving discourse of radicalism so that it is weak in detecting and distinguishing institutional radicalism-related activities. In addition, methodologically the indicators and parameters constructed are vague and unclear because there is no explanation of the process of conceptualization and operationalization. The author argues, by using the framework of the sociology of knowledge, a comprehensive and predictive explanation can be achieved by developing scenarios of radicalism. Typologies, analytical models, and scenarios about radicalism in religious groups have become alternative choices for early detection of radicalism. The radicalism scenario of religious groups can be used as an early detection of radicalism by developing three types of scenarios.
